Experimenting with type for Nothing gold can stay
Where to place the type?
Questions relating to font size, leading etc, are relatively easy compared to where to place a block of type so that the page is well designed. I've scanned the prints at the actual size of the paper 370 mm x 280 mm. The placement of the intaglio graphic also varies on the page. So the dynamic between two placements is changing all the time. Most news bulletins are visually confusing. Here John and I hope to get a balance so that the eye is not led in opposing directions.
Where to place the type in the video?
These prints have been scanned at actual size onto a background of 1920x1080, ie high definition for YouTube video. You can just make out the paper size on sitting in the screen. Now it's obvious that the page design of print and type is one thing for the artist books, but quite another for the video. I've done two versions of each just to show how it's necessary to play - more than twice, by the way - to figure out a good type proportion and placement for each medium. It's why I've decided we can't have the poem in its entirety in the video, but instead a few lines at a time for each print. And similarly Terry Wall's reflections, which fit brilliantly into the artist books, simply can't work in the video, at least in the current formats. So in a while I will create a special PDF of an artist consisting of just poem followed reflection with a simple print for each page. Meantime email me if you have ideas about the print placement.
